Tips on Mixing

Here is a really good read I found. Thought I'd share...

Mixing and mastering
What to do and what better not to do...

I am frequently asked "how do I make loud tracks?", "how do I *master*?".
This little article might serve as a general brainstormer. It is just reflecting my personal opinion on that topic. Yours may be different ;)

Making powerful tracks begins with the writing of the song. You should check at least this:

* Do my instruments and their specific sound deliver what I am looking for? Usually, most sythetic stuff comes with a rich and even tonal spectrum and might sit good in the mix from the start (as long as the sound is not too 'fat' like, for example, a lot of pads are). As opposed to acoustic instruments which have a

Team Hitz Ultimate Kit

If you haven't already heard about TeamHitz then you've been sleeping. They are a group of young producers that have a long list of production credits. Long story short, here is their kit. I have to admit there are some pretty nice sounds in here, but  everyone and their grandma use these sounds. This kit also contains some unheard samples and stems from their beats, so be sure and grab it even if you already have some of their kits.

Tip of The Day #1

Here is a tip I learned a long time ago, and a problem I still struggle with till today:

STOP CRAMMING YOUR BEATS!

Alot of times, when I'm making a beat, I start thinking, "What can I do to make this beat better?" And most times I add extraneous elements that have no place there, and I usually end up screwing up the beat that I'm working on. Too many times alot of Producers and Beatmakers try to cram all these different sounds and effects into their beat and forget that it's the Artist who makes the song, and that you could the beat is used to help the artist convey their feelings and emotions. Your beat doesn't have to be jam-packed with sounds for and artist to like it. You have to remember that the beat is used to help the artist shine. Whether it's their singing or lyrical ability, the beat is just used to help support the singer/rapper.

J.U.S.T.I.C.E League Drum Kit

If you don't already know about them, you need to know about them. The J.U.S.T.I.C.E League stands for "Just Undeniably Some of The Illest Composers Ever" and they are a group of producers from Florida. They truly are some of the best producers out there. Their main style is sampling, but they've done all kinds of stuff. The kit is fairly small, and the download shouldn't take long. Enjoy!

Camel Crusher VST

CamelCrusher is a free 'colouring' multi-effect plugin. It offers two characteristically different distortion sounds which can be blended together to create a wide variety of tones and textures. Great for guitars, drums and plenty more!

There's also a warm, smooth analogue-style low-pass filter with buckets of resonance. Assign a MIDI controller and start tweaking!

Finally, let's not forget the easiest-to-use compressor you'll find anywhere. It can 'phatten' up your sound as quickly as you can turn up the 'Amount' knob! Find out more in the manual.
This is a pretty cool VST that I use for Effects every once in a while, when I'm looking for something original and creative. I usually don't use the Compressor or the Master options, but I definitely play with the Filters and Distortion. In FL you can also play with the separate side volume automation and get some great stuff with this one.

Learn About Mastering

Here is an article I read a while back about mastering, has some pretty good info in it. But for those who are wondering if they should "master" their tracks, here is my 2 cents. If you know what your doing go right on ahead, if you don't then simply don't worry about it. Mastering is for professionals who make albums and whatnot, if anything as a producer it should be the last thing on your list. So with that said, here is the article:

GTG VSTi Series

These are some seriously awesome VSTi's. I just found out about them today, and I didn't have time to really sit down with them, but I got a chance to scroll throught the presets, and they are DOPE! They are .rar files, but really small so they shouldn't take a while to download. Plus they are .dll's so no installing. Yay! Click on the pictures to see a bigger version. Downloads after the jump.

WinRAR

I use WinRAR to package alot of my files on here, so here is the program. It's free to download, so be sure to download so you can access the files here.
